Annual Authors Fest at HB Library on Tuesday
It’s time for the 24th Annual Authors Festival at the Huntington Beach Central Library! The free event will take place on Tuesday, January 31, 2012 from 2:30-4:30pm. It’s a great opportunity for children to meet a variety of authors and illustrators and have their books autographed. This year’s visiting authors include Caroline Arnold, Rene Colato Lainez, Chris Epting, Debra Garfinkle, Alison Jackson, Laura Lacamara, Carolyn Marsden, Joseph Moreus, Eileen Morris, Lori Polydorros, Candace Ryan, Antonio Sacre, Deborah Turner, Gretchen Woelfle and Dawne Wynne. The participating authors’ books will be available for sale.
At 3:45 pm, the awards ceremony for the winners of the “Imagine you lived in the Library” writing and illustrating contest, will be held at the Tabby Theater. The Authors Festival is made possible by the Friends of the Children’s Library, the Huntington Beach Public Library, the Sand Scribes children’s writing group and a grant from the Employees’ Fund of Boeing Corporation.
Annual Group Exhibit opens at the HB Art Center Today
The Huntington Beach Art Center is presenting the annual “Centered on the Center” group exhibition featuring approximately 250 regional artists in a salon style exhibition. It is an open call, non juried exhibition featuring various works including painting, drawing, photography, mixed media, sculpture and installation. The opening reception is on Friday, January 20th from 6 to 9pm. It is free and open to the public. The exhibit continues through February 19th.
On Saturday, there will be a Mardi Gras Mask Making Workshop at the Huntington Beach Art Center, from 10 am -2pm. There is a $20 fee per person and all embellishments are included with the exception of the “mask” blanks, which will be available for purchase in class. The cost of the mask ranges from $3-7 depending on the style. For more information and to register, call 714.536.5258
Free Program for Kids at Shipley Nature Center
The Shipley Nature Center on Goldenwest St. presents a program for kids about the water around us. On Saturday, January 28, 2012 at 1:00 p.m., families can attend the first in a series of four family fun days about water. Kids will learn about what makes the Shipley stream run, meet Olover Ocean and Patti Potable, become a “Planet Water Protector,” tour the rain harvesting water-hogs and make a rain gauge to take home. Surf City Splash – a New Year’s Day Tradition
Join brave souls as they wash out 2011 literally by jumping into the ocean on the first day of the new year, near the Huntington Beach Pier, as part of the 12th Annual Surf City Splash event to benefit the Huntington Beach International Surfing Museum.
There will be a pancake breakfast served by the Lions Club from 8:30am – 11am in Pier Plaza for $5. Participants to this fundraiser will run into the ocean at designated time, around noon. For more information, visit www.hbsurfcitysplash.com

Ice Skating at The Strand, Downtown Huntington Beach
Huntington Harbour Boat Parade tonight!
The 49th annual Huntington Harbour Holiday Boat Parade is tonight and will also be held tomorrow, Sunday, December 11th, 2011. The boat parade is the start of the “Cruise of Lights” fundraiser, which brings music education to school children all over Orange County. According to Grand Marshal Jenny Huntsinger: “The theme this year is “island serenade”. Think Beatles from the British Isles, Pirates ofthe Caribbean, Fantasy Island, Gilligan’s Island, South Sea Islands, Hawaiian Islands, orthe Greek Isles. Ireland is an island, so is Manhattan.”

The 43rd Annual Drive-Thru Nativity at First Christian Church of Huntington Beach on Main Street is on till Friday, December 9th. Each segment of the Nativity is told in 9 specific scenes with live animals and actors, viewable from your car! Admission is free and it starts at 6pm.
